It’s a story that’s been told and a story that’s been lived: those in power pit the poor against the poor. We get distracted fighting over scraps and we forget that we’re actually in this together. Win or lose. Either we’re all about to get really good health care. Or we’re all about to be slaves to the oligarchs.
But how do we win them over? Our Republican neighbors. Don’t we need to win them over? Actually Naomi Klein says:
You don’t. You make sure you have enough people on your side to change the balance of power and take on those responsible, knowing that true populist movements always draw from both the left and the right.
Or in other words, as Haymitch advises Katniss before she enters the Hunger Games arena: “Remember who the real enemy is.”
